 Since 1993, GoldStar Homes has filled a niche between production building and custom building, catering primarily to second time homebuyers and move-down buyers looking for the ability to customize their home while staying within an affordable budget. Jim and Sarah Garrett now take great pride in seeing their successful business evolve into its second generation under the close supervision of their sons, Brad and Paul, and Sarah’s brother David Swafford.
Prior to establishing GoldStar Homes, Sarah and Jim had built a number of homes in West Texas. Then as members of the National Rural Housing Board, they answered an opportunity to be involved in a redevelopment project in Washington D.C. Upon returning to Texas in 1991 and after researching the Metroplex for opportunities, they were drawn to what they perceived to be an underserved market in Johnson County. There, they built their first 300 homes under the Rural Housing program they were involved in. GoldStar was established shortly afterward, when Jim found an opportunity for them to develop their own residential homes in Burleson, which was to become known as The Meadows.
Today, Jim remains active on the development side of GoldStar’s business. The development activity now also involves a number of commercial projects. The family and extended family work together like clockwork. Brad Garrett starts and finishes every job. Using his own equipment, he oversees the grading, construction of the foundations and bricking, and then his crew comes back in to finish landscaping. David Swafford and Paul Garrett oversee all home construction activity. April Collmar keeps the accounting running smoothly, and Sarah Garrett does what she describes as “a little bit of everything—whatever needs doing!”
Actively building for over 10 years in Johnson and Tarrant Counties puts GoldStar ahead of the pack in what has now become a much more competitive market-place. However, the Garretts haven’t lost sight of what it took to establish their reputation. Their motto remains, “We’re here, before, during and after the sale.” The value, creative designs and craftsmanship of GoldStar Homes, their willingness of the construction team to customize floor plans to suit the individual needs of their buyers, and the team’s dedication to quick responsiveness to warranty calls has and continues to be the company’s differentiating factors.
The GoldStar team agrees that listening to customers and offering plenty of choices is the best way to stay on top of design trends and market demands. With 12 to 18 plans per development to choose from, finished neighborhoods exude the same character as custom home neighborhoods.
